Dr Richard Matthews (PhD BE(Hons) MAICD MIEAust) is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Adelaide. His research focuses on the intersection of cybersecurity and forensics. He completed his PhD at the University of Adelaide, Australia with a thesis titled ”Towards a Unified Theory of Sensor Pattern Noise: an analysis of dark current, lens effects and temperature bias in CMOS Image Sensors.” His specialisations include the forensic identification of digital image sensors using sensor pattern noise, penetration testing, social engineering and advanced manufacturing technologies. He is a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, the Institute of Engineers Australia, the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers and the Australian and New Zealand Forensic Science Society.

Dr Matthews has worked in several industries including defence, manufacturing, education and entertainment. From high school, Dr Matthews studied at the Australian Defence Force Academy and served as a Flight Lieutenant in the Royal Australian Air Force. After a training incident, he was medically discharged. He draws valuable lessons from his time in uniform including empathy for the disability sector, veterans and an understanding of global politics.

After leaving the RAAF, Dr Matthews established his entertainment business gaining contracts managing state operations for crewing company Show Support winning several awards. In 2011 he gained employment as an engineer in the automotive manufacturing sector at GM Holden. He served a tour of duty in each of quality management and plant maintenance. Due to the transformation of the automotive industry, he changed direction to the power industry in 2012 working for a start-up engineering firm on power monitoring, automation and water quality projects. He has since gained his doctorate in digital forensics and cyber at the University of Adelaide, is an internationally recognised expert in cyber and information risk and is a TEDx Speaker on the subject.
