Dr. Tom Mawhinney

I was born and raised in the small Western Massachusetts town of Dalton, where I had a pretty routine childhood growing up in the post-war 50s and 60s. I was a scholar-athlete in high school and graduated from the US Coast Guard Academy where I was a three-sport letter winner. I became involved in education when a high-school friend asked me to help out coaching football at the secondary level. I began substitute teaching as well and my career was launched. I retired as a high-school principal 32 years later and began my second career as a college professor training teachers in Manhattan.

My passion is teaching and learning and training others to do it. I have been trained by Jon Saphier at RBT to observe and anlyze teaching and was involved in the Harvard Principal Center and their outstanding week-long training. I consider myself an expert on observing teaching and providing supportive feedback.

I am a life-long learner with a sense of humor and die-hard Red Sox fan!
