Phua Ee Kia
Phua Ee Kia was a PSC (Teaching) scholar with the Ministry of Education,Singapore and graduated with a First-Class Honours Degree in Music from theUniversity of Birmingham, UK, in 2004. He began formal vocal training withProfessor Julian Pike at the Birmingham Conservatoire before honing his voiceunder countertenor Nicholas Clapton, Professor of Singing at the Royal Academyof Music, London. He also studied piano with James Walker at the BirminghamConservatoire.
Phua made his public solo debut at the age of 17 with the role of 'Cobweb'in the Singapore Lyric Opera (SLO)'s production of Britten's A MidsummerNight's Dream (1997) and at 18 he topped a nationwide audition to sing thetreble solo in Bernstein's Chichester Psalms (1998) with the Singapore SymphonyOrchestra (SSO). Other notable solo performances include Andrew Lloyd Webber’s ‘PieJesu’, at the televised 2010 YTL Concert at the Botanic Gardens featuringAndrea Bocelli and the world premiere of Mark Chan’s operetta ‘Flight of theJade Bird’ commissioned as the opening item for the Singapore Arts Festival2012, where he originated the role of the Jade Bird. Phua then reprised therole in the Hong Kong New Vision Arts Festival held at the Hong Kong CulturalCentre Studio Theatre in December 2012.
A familiar face in the local classical music scene, Phua was invited toperform at the Esplanade as part of the ‘Dedicated to You’ series commemoratingthe concert venue’s 10th anniversary in 2012. Another highlight of Phua’scareer was the invitation to speak at the inaugural prestigious Tedx conferenceheld at the Singapore Management University in September 2013.
Phua is at the same time a very sought after vocal instructor and choralconductor, and has directed various exemplary choirs, including the SingaporeLyric Opera Children’s Choir, the Singapore Teachers’ Academy for the aRts(STAR) choir, the Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) choir, the Anglo-ChineseSchool (Barker Road) choir as well as the Anglo-Chinese School (Primary) choirjust to name a few. Phua currently serves on the Artist-Mentor Scheme, aninitiative helmed by STAR and supported by the National Arts Council that aimsto develop MOE teachers’ competencies by engaging practitioners in specialisedareas such as art, music, drama and dance. Phua is also a former presenter withMediacorp radio station Symphony 92.4FM.
