Gregory Luke Larkin
Dr.Gregory Luke Larkin is the inaugural Professor and Lion FoundationChair of Emergency Medicine at the University of Auckland, NewZealand. He previously served as inaugural Professor and Vice Chairof Emergency Medicine at the Yale University School of Medicine, USA,and in academic and clinical positions at the University of TexasSouthwestern in Dallas, Texas, and the University of Pittsburgh,Pennsylvania. Dr. Larkin has over two decades of frontline EDexperience as a Board-certified clinician. As well as trainingemergency professionals and practicing clinical emergency medicine inover a dozen countries, Dr. Larkin has also advised ministries ofhealth, public health organizations and public health practitionersin many parts of the world on a range of issues which relate to theintersection of emergency medicine and public health. He served asan advisor for the Blair government while an Atlantic Fellow inPublic Policy in Whitehall. He has advanced training inbioengineering, biostatistics, engineering and public health.Additionally, he has conducted international research and haspublished extensively - to date, more than 200 scholarly papers.
Dr.Gregory Luke Larkin’s interests in public health have focused oncontrol of infectious diseases (malaria), motor-vehicle safety(including teen driver safety, and airbag safety), minimizing deathsfrom cardiovascular disease and stroke, suicide prevention,interpersonal violence, disaster preparedness, bioterrorism, recognition of tobacco use as a health hazard and utilization ofEmergency Departments visits as an opportunity for briefinterventions to reduce smoking, and emergency departure access andcare of HIV patients.
Dr.Larkin’s work in these public health areas has been published inwell-reputed journals including the American Journal of PublicHealth, Academic Emergency Medicine, and PLos One. He has been amember of the American Public Health Association (APHA) and regularlyattended APHA annual conferences, presenting research findings ateach meeting.
Inrecent years, Dr. Gregory Luke Larkin has also been an activeparticipant and advisor during disasters in Haiti, Iraq, Pakistan andRwanda. He has also served as consultant to SAMHSA, NIMH and theWorld Health Organization on priority matters such as trauma, andsuicide prevention.
