Standing on the starting block, I know the moment I dive into the pool, everything changes – not only for me, but for the people around me. The ripples I create, both in water and life, influence the path of myself and those around me.
Growing up in Atlanta I was often labeled as the “chubby kid”, memories of wearing swim shirts to hide my body gave way to insecure thoughts and restrictive eating practices in an attempt to conform. As I grew older, I discovered my love for swimming and lifting weights. What started as a freshman year weight training program soon ignited my passion for training mental and physical resilience. The coaches who taught me the importance of discipline and resilience, allowed me to see the gym/pool as a place to grow both physically and mentally, opposed to a place of punishment.
This training prompted me to reverse my unhealthy habits, and as I continued to train and become stronger, I began to grow my faith as well. I began attending weekly sessions at my local Church in Buckhead and learned the importance of vulnerability and perseverance. What I was learning from my coaches was mirrored by the spiritual guidance I received from my small group and Church leaders. Their influence inspired me to continue to seek growth in all aspects of my life and continue to push myself to be better every day. As a result, I have had the opportunity to discover my love for serving my community, football, mountain biking, and many other activities that I was not previously interested in. Through those that have influenced me, I can now positively influence the lives of others through the ripples I create.
Every time I’m on the starting block, I now understand the importance of my ripples.
