Haroldo Montealegre
Haroldo Montealegre operates internationally as an executive in the finance, banking, and private equity sectors. At present, Haroldo Montealegre utilizes his extensive background to launch and develop MPeso International, a mobile banking platform built to serve both the banked and unbanked populations. Since its inception in 2010, MPeso has relied on technological advancements and a unique business model to provide a system to transfer money safely without handling large amounts of cash and with a traceable accounting of the transaction. Mr. Montealegre functions in the Chairman of the Board role and is the founder of the Nicaragua-based company.
While presiding over the creation and growth of this new venture, Haroldo Montealegre maintains his presence with Viana Capital Corporation, a private equity firm with offices in Nicaragua and Miami, Florida. Having founded the firm in 1989, Mr. Montealegre continues to serve as the Chairman of the Board. Viana Capital manages a portfolio of assets across several market sectors, including cotton production, ginning, and textile manufacturing, as well as farmland, real estate, retail, industrial, and banking interests.
A seasoned veteran of global finance, Haroldo Montealegre previously operated as the Director of the International Reconstruction Fund and as an advisor to the President of the Inter-American Development Bank. In the former role, Mr. Montealegre liaised with officials from the World Bank and the USAID program, and he negotiated with international banking interests holding Nicaragua's state debt.
A native of Managua, Nicaragua, Haroldo Montealegre has been active in the country's political sphere. Earlier in his 36-year career, Mr. Montealegre served the Central American state as its Vice Minister of Economy and attended the UN Industrial Development meeting in India, where his peers elected him Chairman of the Drafting Committee. Later in his career, Mr. Montealegre instituted significant economic reforms that ushered Nicaragua into democracy and the global economic system as the Economic Advisor for the former President, Violeta Chamorro. Mr. Montealegre also ran for President of Nicaragua during the mid-1990s as a member of the Liberal Unity Party, espousing a platform of economic inclusion, contractual rights, and private property.
