Harold Mayse

Born in Kansas City Missouri. Graduated from Westport High School in 1968. Shortly after high school, I enlisted into the Navy. After leaving the Navy I worked for a number of sign and graphics companies where I learned computer graphics and layout design. I worked in the screen printing and graphics industry until I retired. I retired from the Sign & Graphics Industry in 2005 at the age of 56. I had worked in the graphics industry in one form or another for over 30 years. I soon began to look for something to keep me busy or be a hobby. I was asked to apply my graphics skills to creating a small community newspaper. I had no idea how much work there is in creating a weekly publication or how gratifying it would be. Starting out as more of a flyer than a newspaper, I printed The Sherwood Weekly in my garage/office for the first few months. I soon found that people really like the paper and decided to move into a real office and print the paper on newsprint like regular newspapers. Circulation has gone from just 300 copies to over 3,000 and is becoming a fixture in the area. The Sherwood Weekly is different from similar publications. I am a conservative Christian and the paper reflects those ideas and beliefs. Readers in this area are mostly Christian conservative as well. I do not print negative information or doom and gloom. I prefer humor and information that is geared toward living with a positive attitude. I prefer to promote that idea in every paper. As other publications are on the decline, The Sherwood Weekly is growing rapidly. Reinforcing the idea that people like what the paper represents. Many of our customers/advertisers come from the same culture that has been a part of many communities surround Garden City. I now work many more hours each week putting the paper together than I ever did at any other job. Having divorced in 2008 I have ample time to work on the paper. For the first 2 years I was the only employee. I have recently hired two part time people to help with sales and bookkeeping. OK, my mom does the bookkeeping and keeps me focused. I am a huge supporter of pet rescue. I have always been involved with it in some way for most of my life. Shortly after starting the paper stared to see what a large problem this community had. I started C.A.R.E, the Companion Animal Rescue Effort. We have rescued over 150 pets, mostly dogs, in just the last two years.
