Harry Stendhal
Harry Stendhal of Stendhal Gallery contends that the best art has a historical and socio-political impact. He has exhibited the works of several artists such as George Maciunas, Yoko Ono, and Hans Richter whose influence has extended beyond the walls of the gallery. Stendhal Gallery mounts museum-calibur exhibitions as educational vehicles to raise awareness. It aims to educate by bringing previously unseen works to the public’s attention, as well as many historical documents that demonstrate the impact of these artwork up to the present day. Through Stendhal Gallery, Harry Stendhal has promoted the academic study of art as knowledge and has collaborated with scholars from Princeton, Harvard, Dartmouth, NYU, and Columbia, amongst others. Harry Stendhal’s interests range from urban planning and architecture to Dada, video art, installation, avant-garde film and Fluxus. Stendhal Gallery reflects these wide-ranging passions, presenting exhibitions that include an array of media and that present both art and art historical documentation. One Stendhal Gallery exhibition from 2010 was “Greetings from Daddaland: Fluxus Mail Art and Rubber Stamps," a collection that included artistic rubber stamps and artwork created by these objects. Additionally, on display were several films, including interviews with important artists and curators of this work and documentaries on mail art. In 2011, Harry Stendhal orchestrated "Mapping Maciunas," an exhibition as happening that promoted the encounter with art as an experience rather than simply a viewing of art as epistemological development rather than in being aesthetic merely objects.
In 2005, Stendhal Gallery mounted an exhibition entitled "Warhol Happened." In his essay "The Americans," David Betz credited the show with helping revive an interest in Warhol and helping to push prices of his work up to the impressive level at which they remain today.
As a fine art publisher, Harry Stendhal successfully launched the art career of graphic designer Paula Scher in the art world. Stendhal Gallery was the exclusive publisher of Ms. Scher's "map painting" prints. A print of "United States" recently sold for a record price of $11,000 at auction.
