Ira Levy, MBA, CPA,CA
Toronto
When I was a child, I would take apart anything that I could get my hands - a toy, electronics, anything, in order to find out what made it work. Once I understood all of the inner workings, I would carefully put it back together, ensuring that all the pieces were put back in exactly the right place
As an adult, that curiosity moved from wanting to understand gadgets to an interest in the inner machinations of companies, studying financial information to understand how the company worked.
I have parlayed that curiosity, interest, and thirst for understanding, into my professional and educational career, receiving an MBA and a CPA, CA designation.
While at KPMG, I was able to learn about companies in all sectors of the Financial Industry – from Hedge Funds and Private Equity firms to major Canadian banks and even the Stock Exchange. Auditing these firms allowed me to understand how hedge funds successfully invest client’s funds and how the Canadian banks were able to weather the financial crisis with relative ease.
Upon leaving KPMG, my experiences have been centered on financial roles within the music, consumer goods and industrial goods industries. I now have an intimate understanding of a companies’ operations, what makes them successful, or conversely, helping them to determine where systemic problems exist.
In my various roles, I have helped to develop IFRS policies. I have developed policies and procedures to help ensure accounting functions are effective to accurately manage the company’s cash flow. I have provided executives with in-depth analysis of corporate earnings. I have even done some international tax filing!
My quest for understanding, and my dedication to making things work, is what motivates me to keep growing and contributing to whatever endeavor I join. I am a team player, a mature and confident leader, and a life-long student, who is always willing to learn more, do better and strive for excellence.
