The city of Islamabad (34.43 N, 73.04 E), the capital of Pakistan, is located on the northern edge of the Pothohar Plateau in the province of Punjab. The word ‘Islamabad’ means ‘city of Islam’. It has an area of 350 square miles and a population of 1.67 million (2011). It has a humid subtropical climate with five seasons, which include winter, spring, rainy monsoon and autumn.

Currently Islamabad has a single airport, the Benazir Bhutto International Airport, connecting it to the world and the other cities in the country itself. It is accessible to Peshawar via the M1 motorway and Lahore via the M2 motorway.

There are many tourist attractions in the city, which can entertain people with different interests. The beauty of the city can be enjoyed by staying at the resort called Pir Sohawa and by visiting Daman-E-Koh, which is a hill top garden and a viewing point. Those with an interest in architecture can explore Shah Faisal Mosque. For history enthusiasts there are museums like the Pakistan Museum of Natural History and the Lok Virsa Museum. Those who enjoy water sports and boating can visit the Rawal Lake, which is an artificial water reservoir. For children there is the Islamabad zoo, which has birds like ostriches to swans and animals ranging from monkeys to lions.
