Jermaine Demetris Gassaway

I am an educator, superintendent, author, and lifelong advocate for expanding educational opportunity. My journey began in Washington, D.C., where I experienced firsthand how access to quality education can shape a person's future. As a teenager, I earned a full scholarship to The Piney Woods School in Mississippi, an experience that changed my life and inspired my commitment to helping every student reach their full potential. I later became the first person in my family to graduate from college, earning a degree in Business Administration from Johnson C. Smith University before pursuing advanced studies in educational leadership.

Throughout my career, I have served as a teacher, curriculum coordinator, principal, director of schools, and superintendent. I believe that great schools are built through strong leadership, high expectations, and meaningful relationships with students, families, and educators. I enjoy helping school leaders grow while creating learning environments where every child feels challenged, supported, and valued.

I am also the author of Unopened Books: Multiplying the 2% and When You Arrive: A Children's Book About Racism. Through my writing and leadership, I strive to promote educational equity, strengthen school communities, encourage literacy, and increase teacher diversity. My mission is simple: ensure every student has access to an excellent education and every opportunity to succeed.
