Jim Balfanz has served the nonprofit organization City Year for over 20 years. Beginning as a corps member in Boston in 1993, Mr. Balfanz rose through the ranks of City Year, holding the positions of civic engagement coordinator, deputy director of national affairs, and director of new site development. After serving as executive director of City Year Greater Philadelphia from 1997 to 2005, he took on the role of COO, and eventually, president of City Year. In his current role as president, Jim Balfanz oversees City Year’s performance. He manages 26 sites, 900 employees, 2,800 AmeriCorps volunteers, and a $125+ million annual budget.

In preparation for his career, Jim Balfanz earned his BS in political science with a minor in Asian studies from Northeastern University in Boston, graduating with honors. He went on to attend the graduate program in executive management at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business in Philadelphia. He was also a Fellow at the Aspen Institute.
