"We all die. The goal isn't to live forever; the goal is to create something that will.”
Chuck Palahniuk
John Roam is a photographer in search of a story. After working in high-tech for twenty-five years, John decided to pursue his passion for riding the backroads of the U.S. in his Jeep or on his motorcycle, photographing the uniqueness and beauty of rural Texas and throughout the country. For John, being a photographer isn’t just about creating art and recording a moment in history; it’s about experiencing that moment.
John’s photographic adventures began at a young age. He was inspired by his father’s ability to capture the scene and imprint it with his presence. Since he received his first camera at nine years old, John has never been without a camera.
These days, John can be found exploring the backroads of Texas, capturing images of abandoned gas stations, fields of springtime bluebonnets, or a weathered old country barn in the middle of a hayfield. Whether a scraggly tooth smile covered with hand-cranked ice cream on a child's face, an autumn late afternoon where mustard gold and russet fallen leaves mirror a vast Texas sunset, or the light bouncing off his road queen on a rarely traveled two-lane freeway in rural Texas, John’s recorded moments tell a story.
John shares his talents with causes close to his heart, like the Constellation Foundation, an organization dedicated to improving the lives of youth in and aging out of foster care. In the summer of 2008, John spent a weekend at Constellation Foundation’s inaugural camp with their campers recording moments for kids and parents, as well as the Constellation Foundation’s website.
These days John can be found in his jeep. He currently resides in Austin, Texas, the center of the Lone Star State, and the perfect place to turn his lens into the next adventure.
