Katie R. Thomas, Esq.

Washington, D.C.

Hi, I am Katie. I an energy and environment lawyer, working in Washington, D.C. I graduated in December, 2013 with my law degree magna cum laude, Certificate in Energy Law, and Master’s in Environmental Law and Policy magna cum laude from Vermont Law School. I am admitted as an attorney to the Bar in Colorado, where I grew up.
I enjoy working on climate change solutions like the integration of smart grid technologies and renewable energy generation resources. I am most interested in Energy issues because I am dedicated to achieving a clean energy economy that supports jobs growth, security, and environmental health.
In law school I clerked with the U.S. Department of Justice, Environmental Natural Resource Division. I worked on litigation for the civil enforcement of the federal Clean Air Act. I also served as a legal intern for the Vermont Natural Resource Council fighting the Vermont Yankee Nuclear Plant. That summer I also wrote a community solar toolkit for the Vermont Town Energy Committees. In the summer of 2012 I worked for the U.S. Department of Energy - Energy Efficiency Renewable Energy Program in Golden, Colorado.
In 2012, I stayed home to help my mom through chemotherapy for uterine and ovarian cancers. But, both cancers were in stage one, and we are Blessed because she is now doing great.
I loved my job as a Research Associate for the the Vermont Law School Institute for Energy and the Environment, where I worked for almost 3 years under a grant from the US Department of Energy. I worked on Smart Grid Issues. I co-wrote a Smart Grid Customer Privacy Policy for utilities and state legislatures to use. I traveled to two industry conferences to present my work in Smart Grid privacy, and published in an online energy trade publication. I co-authored a forthcoming book on legal and regulatory issues pertaining to Smart Grid.
I graduated magna cum laudefrom Southern Illinois University – Carbondale in 2009 with a Bachelor’s in Political Science with Minors in Spanish and Environmental Studies.
