Guiding the Greenbrier Academy as founder since 2007, L. Jay Mitchell leads an experienced team at an academic/therapeutic boarding school that combines college prep studies with therapeutically immersive learning. L. Jay Mitchell’s school places equal weight on the social, emotional, physical, and academic aspects of well-being as it works to provide girls age 14 to 18 with an accepting, supportive environment in which to flourish and grow.

Having attended Brigham Young University, Mr. Mitchell also earned a business degree and law degree from the University of Idaho. From 1976 to 1980, he was a judge advocate and captain in the US Air Force, where he defended federal physicians, hospitals, and members of the military in administrative hearings and court martial trials.

Throughout the 1980s and early 1990s, Mr. Mitchell led the SUWS Adolescent Program in Shoshone, Idaho, as founder, director, and majority owner. He developed a 21-day adolescent intervention program that accepted troubled youth from across the country. The model L. Jay Mitchell pioneered involved working in tandem with diverse private educational consultants and boarding schools to ensure consistent enrollment. At the same time, he envisioned a groundbreaking personal change system that is known as “applied relationality.”
