I've worked in customer service almost my entire life. I started with running the concession stands at non profit events, and by the time I was 15 I was working as a busser at a local diner. Eventually, I switched over to fast food and worked as an unofficial ‘shift lead’ at Dunkin' Donuts. I waitressed at a couple places too, but my most fulfilling job was at Sephora, as a part time beauty advisor.
I believe you can gain something from every interaction you have; whether it's a new way to think about something or just a different way to take your coffee. This was very true during my time at Sephora.
As a beauty advisor I was responsible for helping a customer find their next favorite product or the perfect foundation, but most importantly I helped them feel seen. While I met a variety of women, all with vastly different experiences, they all expressed a similar idea of self love.
Some of the women I assisted were new mothers, who were struggling to make time and show up for themselves. Others were older women, who had battled cancer or were in the midst of grieving. No matter what they were going through, they all came to Sephora for one reason; to feel like themselves again.
Through my experience as a beauty advisor, I learned the importance of feeling comfortable in your skin. Sephora is not just a place to get makeup, but to find the products that make you feel confident and seen. We're all looking for that one product that makes our eyes shine a little brighter and our smile a little bigger. At Sephora, I was given the unique opportunity to make that happen. In addition to helping women rediscover their spark, I learned how important it is to cherish and take care of your own. Life's too short to wish things were different. All of these incredible women inspired me to always pursue what I'm passionate about which led to my recent major change to Fisheries and Wildlife science, and hopefully soon, many other opportunities.
