Dr. Marisa VanDyke is an occupational therapist and massage therapist who has worked treating fascial dysfunction of mature bodies since 2016. She has overcome her own chronic pain and manages a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis with the fascial treatments she provides the public.
Fascia is the connective tissue that surrounds every organ, bone, muscle, and even individual muscle fibers in the human body. Not only does fascial tissue infiltrate and surround the structures we use for posture maintenance and movement, it creates continuity and can hinder or facilitate communication and function within the human system.
The health of our connective tissue is essential to human function. If fascial tissue gets restricted and doesn’t allow glide, we experience pain, muscle and nerve compression, and even restricted blood flow. Restrictions within the fascia can limit body awareness, create pain and postural dysfunction, and limit our ability to move. Current research is finding that restrictions within the fascial system are key components to many painful conditions such as fibromyalgia, myofascial pain syndrome, and repetitive stress or overuse injuries.
