Matthew Shaw
Historian in London, United Kingdom
I'm interested in the past, and how we make use of it today.
I am the Librarian of the Institute of Historical Research at the School of Advanced Study, and before this was a curator at the British Library for 14 years.
My most recent book is a history of the French Revolutionary Calendar: Time and the French Revolution (Boydell & Brewer, 2011), and I've also published a short life of the Duke of Wellington. Currently, I'm working on a book about the history of newspapers for Reaktion Books.
My exhibitions at the BL included Taking Liberties (2007), Growing Knowledge (2010), On the Road (2012), Enduring War: grief, grit and humour (2014), and Animal Tales (2015). I also worked on Europeana 1914-1918 and the Spare Rib Digitisation Project.
I've given talks at Second Home, Dulwich Picture Gallery and Oxford Museum of the History of Science.
And, I'm sometimes asked to take photographs of things.
