Miroslav Lajčák is one of Europe’s most experienced senior diplomats, with a career spanning the Slovak government, the European Union and the United Nations. He served four terms as Slovakia’s Minister of Foreign and European Affairs – including a period as Deputy Prime Minister – and was twice appointed Slovak Ambassador, first to Japan and later to the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. A recognised authority on the Western Balkans, he has spent more than 25 years working on the region in a range of capacities, including as the EU’s representative overseeing Montenegro’s 2006 independence referendum, as High Representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina from 2007 to 2009, and as EU Special Representative for the Belgrade-Pristina Dialogue from 2020 to 2025. He also served as President of the 72nd UN General Assembly in 2017–2018 and chaired Slovakia’s 2019 OSCE Chairmanship.
