Within our collections there are about 1.5 million specimens.
The Bird collections include many examples of fine Victorian taxidermy by Gunn and other local taxidermists. Among them are several historically important specimens, including first records for Britain.
In our Egg collections, we hold extensive collections of both British and foreign material numbering some 10,000 specimens.
The Mammal collection, consists of a comprehensive collection of East Anglian mammals (skins and
mounts) which are frequently used for education and research.
In our Reptile, Amphibian and Fish collections, we have about 130 specimens of reptiles and amphibians. The 300 fish specimens are mainly of local origin.
Our Insect collections, include several large and nationally important collections, notably the pre-eminent Fountaine-Neimy collection of butterflies and the Bridgman collection of Hymenoptera. There are several large collections covering all orders, including 56,000 British and 30,000 foreign Lepidoptera, and 30,000 British Diptera.
Invertebrate collections, includes marine, freshwater and terrestrial species and constitutes the most comprehensive collection of East Anglian non-insect invertebrates. There are extensive collections of foreign shells, but the most important collection of molluscs is that of W.J.O.Holmes, with 12,000 British spec
