Neva Campbell
Myrtle Beach
I was born and raised in Myrtle Beach amid the saltwater and sand to classy, hardworking Southerners. The last of four children, some might say I was a "surprise" to my parents. Of course, I ended being the best surprise they've ever received (unconfirmed fact).
I began writing when my pre-K teacher made me. Later my Ode to Summer poem, written on construction paper and illustrated with crayons, hung on the wall of my primary school. I was famous! Then I broke my acclaimed writing arm and for a time my best friend wrote all my assignments and inconspicuously corrected my wrong answers. I guess she was my first editor.
After graduating college, I dabbled in writing while I pursued an art career in Charleston, SC. My first published article and illustrations were for the original Skirt! Magazine in 1995. Famous again!
Then I married a funeral director. We moved back to Myrtle Beach. I created two humans from scratch.
In 2007, I started writing for The Sun News while I parented two rambunctious school children. I blogged how-to, parenting, and lifestyle pieces for their Myrtle Beach Moms Blog. Soon, my blog posts were being chosen for print in the Local section of the newspaper. For the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Hugo, I wrote a piece about my experience of surviving and rebuilding in the aftermath of that storm. It was printed on the front page of the Coasting section.
In 2009, I took a desk job editing a newsletter for a small church. A few years later, I became a monthly contributor with Mom*tastic. My previous editor from The Sun News contacted me in late 2012 to write for Fuel Interactive. Since then I've written profiles on area dining, attractions, and accommodations for Fuel's clients.
As a freelance writer my focus has been human interest pieces in journalistic, essay, critical, and blogging styles as well as copywriting for multimedia content. I am looking to strengthen these areas as well as branch out into others.
I am driven, dependable, creative, and excited about my work. I pride myself on consistently submitting the assigned work before my deadline dates. Also, I am a recognized artist, a ukulele-ist, coffee snob, and a damn fine cook.
