Nico Meyering
vestal, NY
Nico Meyering has loved comic books almost as long as he can remember. His discovery of the genre happened when he was a young child stuck in a hospital bed. To help keep him occupied, Nico’s father gave him several issues of Batman. Nico was enamored with the art, the stories, and the characters that came to life on the pages.
His interest spilled over beyond the comics themselves. He began to play the video games and watch the television shows that were spawned by the comics as well. Throughout the years Nico’s tastes became more sophisticated and he began to read graphic novels and to appreciate the way comic books reflected the national mood as the decades passed. For example, before the Vietnam War, comics generally had hard and fast boundaries between good and evil, but afterwards, more nuanced and complex villains and storylines began to emerge.
When Nico moved into his own apartment, he quickly filled it with bookshelves dedicated to his favorite comic books. He also has a large collection of non-comic material which includes authors like Franzen, Wilde, Tropper, and King.
Nico is currently a graduate student at the University of Binghamton.
