Yifang of Oasis Nature Farm
Prescott,WI, USA
I was born and grew up in Taiwan. I wanted to be a scientist since I was little. I studied to become a biologist until I got married and became a mother. I homeschooled my 4 children and began learning outside of traditional schools. Degree is not as important as most Chinese consider any longer.
I saw many needs in this world and hope to help. I was an outcast of my family due to someone's mental problems and experienced hunger for a long time when I was in college. I learned to babysit young children to support myself and foraged wild food to supply my low income. After I got married and moved to the States, I had chance to grow my own food. I started with conventional gardening, then moved to organic practice. I found in so called "organic" growing practice, people only change the materials they use to deal with the problems. The root problems are still ignored. In order to grow food organically, the practice teaches farmers to use natural products to do the same works as synthesis pesticide, herbicides, and fertilizers. The root problems are not dealt.
When I brought my kids to the library to find books to study, I also did my study on farming. After reading and taking notes of many farming practices, I decide to try nature farming. With this method, I hope to transform desert into food producing forest. Before I can work in a desert, there are many things I need to learn. I started with transforming our lawn to food plot first.
I know I had chosen a wild dream. The hardships in my past prepared me to take the challenge.
I don't know how or when my dream will come true. Every experience or improvement I do in my daily life brings me closer to that dream.
Nature Farming requires lots of hard works, the kind that drains out physical strength quickly. Still there's a little girl inside me hasn't been satisfied. So I like to transform useful items into arts to fill that gap.
