Phil Broman Grape City

Since 1962, Phil Broman has dedicated his career to English education for students in Japan. Starting out as an English conversation teacher for East-West Bunka Gakuen, he spent seven years working in various schools and centers, such as the Nichibei Kaiwa Center. At that time, he combined his teaching responsibilities with his studies in early childhood education at Tamagawa University, earning primary school and kindergarten teaching licenses and English teacher certification. In 1967, he joined MeySen Academy, a sister company to Grape City, as an English teacher. Phil Broman eventually took on the role of principal of the academy and later served as chairman, which was his most recent position.

While working at Grape City’s Meysen Academy, Mr. Broman helped grow enrollment to more than 4,000 students and create an innovative teaching method for English as a second language. For more than 30 years, he also oversaw a summer education program in the United States for 7th grade students, welcoming more than 5,000 participants over the years.

In addition to his commitment to students, Mr. Broman has provided assistance to his community and others in need. The academy offered relief effort assistance to East Japan after the earthquake in 2011, and he travels to Korea, India, and Mongolia, among many other countries, to provide assistance in English education.
