I love to create things, and I love to sew; so, I have recently taken up making personalized purses. Every weekend I peruse estate sales and fabric stores to find one-of-a-kind and hard-to-find fabrics at reasonable prices, so I can pass on the savings to my customers.

For decades, since I was a young adult, I wore a big leather purse with a shoulder strap. I must have been lugging 30 pounds of stuff on my shoulder—you never know when you might need a flashlight or tape measure. I used to marvel at how my husband could carry everything he needed in his pockets; his answer to everything was, “It’s in the car.” Of course, there was always the inevitable, “Hey, hon, could I use your super-Swiss-Army-Knife? The one with the pliers?” And, of course, I would always have whatever he or I ever needed in my purse/briefcase/toolbox.

One day I came across a simple purse at a garage sale. I really only liked it because it had a cat pattern. (I LOVE cats!) It was a lot smaller than the saddlebag I normally carried, so I had to empty out a lot of hardware and bulky items. It also had a hand-strap instead of a shoulder-strap, so I had to get used to that. Within a couple of weeks, the shoulder pain that I had learned to live with for 30-plus years was gone! I loved my new purse! And, as I examined it more closely, I thought, “I could make these!”

And, so, these are the fruits of my labor. I have been experimenting with different designs and have come up with a simple yet functional, roomy yet compact, casual yet elegant piece. It's perfect for the beach or opera house. Once you start carrying one around you’ll be inundated with comments like, “I LOVE your purse,” and, “Where on earth did you find that?” Of course, the design of the purse is purely functional; it’s the fabric and pattern that make it “pop.”
