I’ve always had a love for woodworking. In school I selected a double block of woodworking class while my peers where busy in the mechanics or electrical. In 1999 I found myself moving into a rental suite that desperately needed the hardwood floors refinished. The landlord would only cover the cost of materials and rentals so if I wanted the floors refinished I would have to do it myself.

I remembered that an employee of mine (at the time I ran a painting business) had recently purchased some hardwood floor refinishing tools with the hopes of getting a business going but up till that point had been struggling. We agreed on an amount and the two of us set out to refinish the floors (something I definitely don’t recommend!). After some basic instruction I turned on the sander and began sanding off years of wear and tear.

I was about 30 seconds into my first floor and despite the fatigue I knew that this is what I wanted to do. From there, my employee and I actually went into business together, forming Manhattan Harwood. We worked together for a couple years and then went our separate ways in 2003 and I went on to form Restoration Hardwood Ltd.

That was 8 years ago and I haven’t looked back. In those years I’ve attended and continue to attend NWFA schools and seminars in order to stay on top of my profession. I’m always interested in improving our craft and our service anyway I can. These days that means incorporating the latest tools and environmentally friendly coatings as well as streamlining and simplifying what we do in order to improve our customer service. It’s been 12 years now (hard to believe) but I still love what I do and the company that myself and my employees have created.
