Robert Buchanan MD

A diplomate of the American Board of Neurological Surgery and the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, Robert Buchanan, MD, has been a practitioner of neurosurgery and psychiatry for over 15 years. He is the author of several medical articles and has been a guest lecturer at a number of national and international medical conferences. Robert Buchanan, MD, currently serves as the Chief of Functional and Restorative Neurosurgery and Neuroscience at the Seton Healthcare Brain and Spine Institute located in Austin, Texas. He is a committee member of the Seton Family of Hospitals Ethics Committee and IRB Committee. Dr. Buchanan is also certified by the Medical Board of California and carries memberships with the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS), the Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS), the American Psychiatric Association (APA), and the AANS/CNS Section on Neurotrauma and Critical Care.

Dr. Buchanan graduated with honors from Saint Louis University, School of Medicine, and completed his residencies at the University of San Diego (UCSD) School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry and the Department of Neurosurgery in 1998. He then completed three separate fellowships at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, UCSD, and Yale University in genetics, psychobiology and psychopharmacology, and epilepsy surgery and functional neurosurgery. With the ability to help his patients recover physically and psychologically, Dr. Buchanan performs all aspects of neurosurgery, including brain, spine, and peripheral nerve disorders. He specializes in treating conditions such as epilepsy, deep brain stimulation, Parkinson's disease, essential tremor, Tourette syndrome, dystonia, and pain syndromes. Dr. Buchanan is also trained to treat psychiatric disorders such as Major Depressive Disorder and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

Dr. Buchanan is an Associate Professor at the University of Texas (UT) in Austin for the Department of Psychology and the Center of Neuroscience. He is also a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Texas, Southwestern Medical School in the Department of Psychiatry. At his lab in Texas Dr. Buchanan performs ongoing research in brain function and treatment options for epilepsy, movement disorders, and psychiatric diseases using Image Guided Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation.
