Rolph Balgobin holds postgraduate degrees from the University of Cambridge and Manchester University and advanced degrees from the University of the West Indies. He has also achieved a postgraduate diploma from the ACCA in Corporate Governance and a certificate and diploma in Corporate Governance from the Caribbean Corporate Governance Institute.
A successful serial entrepreneur, Dr Balgobin is executive chairman of The Quicksilver Group, which owns subsidiaries operating in sectors including property, professional services, energy, education and manufacturing and trades all over the world. As well as being a director of a number of companies and social enterprises, Dr Balgobin was formerly a director of the Massy Group and chairman of Home Construction Limited, CL Financial, Caribbean Dockyard Services, and Caribbean Petrochemical Manufacturing.
Dr Balgobin has formerly served as an independent senator in the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago’s parliament, chairing the Joint Select Committee on National Security and serving on the Public Accounts Committee and the Public Accounts Enterprises Committee. He was also previously a member of a cabinet-appointed committee responsible for the review and assessment of all special purpose and wholly owned state enterprises, as well as for reviewing the Government-Assisted Tertiary Education (GATE) programme and on the Economic Development Advisory Board of Trinidad and Tobago.
A black belt in Shotokan karate, Dr Balgobin is also a Catholic lay minister and a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce and has published research in academic journals regarding corporate turnaround and corporate governance. He has been married for 25 years and has three children.
