I'm a writer and social history fanatic. My novel Ravenscraig is set in Winnipeg during the immigration boom years of the 1890s into the 1900s. I am deeply honored that Ravenscraig won the Carol Shields Winnipeg Book Award, was shortlisted for the Margaret McWilliams Award, and that it is recommended by National Geographic Magazine as What to Read Before You Visit Winnipeg.
Thank you very much to all of the readers who have written to tell me they enjoyed the story of two very different families. The Zigmans are Jewish immigrants from East Europe struggling to survive in the North End. The wealthy Willows family lives in a mansion called Ravenscraig Hall. At the heart of the story is Rupert Willows and his often appalling behavior as a member of the ruling elite in Winnipeg.
The true stories I learned about the Titanic, typhoid and the prostitution scandal gave me rich material for the large cast of characters I was blessed to have come clamoring to be in the book.
I am currently writing the sequel featuring many of the characters in Ravenscraig. I'm hoping to have it ready for my beta readers in spring 2021.
This story opens in 1914 on the French Riviera and deals with art forgery, Winnipeg coping with the Great War, and the heroic efforts and mistakes made as Winnipeg struggled to survive the "Spanish" Flu Pandemic of 1918-19.
Romance, intrigue and bad behavior abound.
