Non-Profit Vice President in Washington, D.C.

Sarah Gillooly (they/she) is the Vice President for State Outreach & Engagement at Americans United for Separation of Church and State where they work every day to build the power of AU’s members and supporters to protect religious freedom for all Americans. As a Quaker and a queer, non-binary, white co-conspirator from the South, Sarah knows that their liberation is bound up with yours.

Before joining AU, Sarah served as the Director of Political Strategy & Advocacy at the ACLU of North Carolina, where she oversaw the organization's political, organizing and legislative agendas in North Carolina. In that role, Sarah lobbied in the North Carolina General Assembly on a broad range of civil rights and liberties issues and built integrated advocacy campaigns in the areas of immigrant rights and criminal justice reform.

Prior to joining the ACLU, Sarah G spent nearly a decade with Planned Parenthood. First as a government relations staffer in Kansas, where she helped protect federal family planning funding for more than 5,000 low-income Kansans. And later at Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) in Washington, D.C., where they lead a nation-wide contraceptive equity policy project and worked with Planned Parenthood affiliates across the country to help them develop advocacy campaigns for a changing world. Through that work, Sarah helped affiliates identify and execute public policy goals that resulted in protecting more than $7.15 million for patient care.

Sarah started her professional career as a community health worker in Kansas City and later an organizer for LGBT equality.

Sarah ran for the Missouri House of Representatives in Kansas City's 24th House District in 2012. Sarah G is also a pro at managing up, non-profit leadership, and speaking across differences and great divides. Sarah has an extensive background in media work, providing on-camera interviews and managing coverage by national outlets including MSNBC, Al Jazeera, and NPR.

Sarah holds an M.A. in Women’s Studies from Loyola University Chicago, a B.A. in Women’s Studies from Agnes Scott College in Atlanta, GA, and is currently working toward an M.Div at Earlham School of Religion. Sarah is an experienced abortion, labor, and postpartum doula. When they're not doing policy work, Sarah G is a podcast aficionado and agrees with Adrienne Rich that there are days when housework really is the only outlet.
