Saudi Garcia
Providence, Rhode Island
My interests range from urban education, affordable housing, alternative schooling programs, to anthropology, Dominican Cultural and Political issues, and digital media's shaping of global relationships. I divide my passions into three overlapping areas: Activism, Research and Professional Development.
I enjoy being active in my campus community through various events, students groups and work in organizations such as the Third World Center and the Brown Women's Rugby Team. I have previously been affiliated with the Leadership Enterprise for a Diverse America program; the Rhode Island Coalition for the Homeless, Providence Breakthrough and Generation Citizen as a volunteer.
I am currently affiliated with the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Research program as a students researcher. My research project attempts to understand the relationship between the Dominican nation-state and its diaspora through the proxy of the experiences of young second-generation women.
I was born in Dominican Republic and immigrated to the United States at age ten. This fact of movement and displacement will influence my future work towards a Ph.D in Anthropology. Professionally, I am interested in using the skills I have gained planning the 2012 National Dominican Student Conference to learn more about public relations and events management.
Years have passed since then, and I am bent on using my education to ensure that many more people have a chance to succeed. I will be graduating from Brown University in 2014 and I am an alum of the LEDA Scholars Program, Class of 2010.
