Music serves as a beautiful, challenging art form that provokes thought and evokes emotions. I discovered my love for music as a child, performing in musicals, such as "Cinderella" and "Annie." In the fifth grade, I joined chorus, marking the first year of my chorus journey. I sang throughout all of middle school and high school and still continue to sing today as a member of the UGA Women’s glee club. Women’s Glee Club serves as a safe haven for me, where I can escape the stressful outside world, and do what I love: sing. When in Glee Club, I get the privilege to hear long perfectly unison runs, high pitched heavens, and captivating syncopated rhythms. When surrounded by this angelic music, heaven is upon me.

To achieve this resplendent sound, every glee club member must work together cohesively: paying attention to musical symbols, thinking critically, accurately hitting notes, rhythms, and pitches, and singing the song expressively. On top of that, the choir must elongate vowels, enunciate words, maintain perfect singing posture, and focus on the conductor, while responding to his musical directions.

It took me a long time to learn to read music, sing properly, and master all of the miscellaneous elements that go into performing. Furthermore, cultivating my singing voice took time: developing my tone, learning how to breathe properly, increasing my vocal range gradually through practice, and controlling my oscillation of pitch. However, some improvement in singing just comes with age.

All of these years spent in chorus have impacted my life significantly. My participation in chorus has given me an outlet for expression and a chance to stand in the spotlight through solo performances. Moreover, my involvement in musical activities has given me the opportunity to unlock my creative side and challenge myself to think quickly: mentally juggling an array of musical elements simultaneously. Above all things, however, singing and listening to music make me happy. It puts that pep in my step, especially when walking around campus. It brings me so much joy and for that reason, music will always be a part of my life.
