Upon completing a bachelor's degree in journalism at Colorado State University and a juris doctor degree at the University of Denver, Shawn Eric Gillum began his career as a deputy district attorney at the Office of the District Attorney for the First Judicial District in Golden, Colorado. He served 1 year in this capacity before he was recruited to work at Isaacson Rosenbaum as lead attorney in criminal and administrative proceedings. Among other highlights during his 3 years with the firm, Shawn Eric Gillum argued a landmark case before the Colorado Supreme Court, published at Turbyne v. People, 151 P.3d 563 (Colo. 2007).

Shawn Gillum has since worked as general counsel to Hope Online Learning Academy and attorney at The Orr Law Firm. In recent years, he has pursued interests in journalism, serving as a weekday evening news anchor at KCWY News 13 in Casper, Wyoming, and news reporter at WOOD TV8 in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

He has produced and authored several investigative stories, including the discovery of city workers illegally dumping snow onto land that was designated as a city park, and was named Best News Reporter in 2017 by the Wyoming Association of Broadcasters. While working in Michigan, he leveraged his background in law to provide on-air legal analysis for high-profile cases.
