Sidney Green
Sidney Green was the fifth player picked by the Chicago Bulls in the 1983 NBA Draft. During his 10-year career, he played for the Detroit Pistons, the New York Knicks, the Orlando Magic (as the first player taken in the expansion draft), the San Antonio Spurs, and the Charlotte Hornets. He retired from the Hornets after the 1993 NBA Season. Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, where he attended the legendary Thomas Jefferson High School, Sidney Green earned a basketball scholarship to attend the University of Nevada Las Vegas in 1979. In 1983, his senior year, his team was picked for the first time ever as number one in the country. He was recognized as the Big West Player of the Year and as a 3rd team All-American, and he was the first player to have his uniform number (21) retired. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Sociology. In 1995, after being runner-up for the UNLV Men’s Basketball head coach position, Sidney Green achieved his dream of being a head coach by accepting a position at Long Island University, Southampton. After two successful seasons, he accepted another head coach position at University of North Florida, Jacksonville (UNF). After 2 successful seasons at UNF, Florida Atlantic University pursued Sidney Green with vigor to coach its Men’s Basketball Program. Coach Green provided the school’s then-president, Dr. Anthony Catanese, with a five-year plan to win the conference championship and become one of the top 64 teams in America to make the NCAA tournament. Coach Green and his staff were able to accomplish his plan in three years by winning the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship. That same year, he was named Coach of the Year. In 2009, Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf of the Chicago Bulls asked Sidney Green to help his organization to win more NBA Championships. During Green’s first year, he was the teams big man coach and worked specifically with Joakim Noah. After Sidney Green demonstrated a strong passion for community relations and motivational speaking during the season, President and COO Michael Reinsdorf asked Green to join him in the front office as the team’s spokesperson and to function as the team’s ambassador at events and meetings in the greater Chicago area. Due to his speaking skills, leadership, and extensive experience as a player and coach, Sidney Green has proven himself a great asset to his organization.
