Born and raised in Vancouver, BC; Steve played baseball at the University of Washington, Los Angeles City College, and spent a summer in the prestigious Alaska League playing for the Goldpanners before heading to play at Long Beach State. He concluded his collegiate baseball career with the Dirtbags and earned a BA Degree in Communications. Continuing his education, Steve received a Teaching Credential in Physical Education from National University and Scouting Certification from Sports Management Worldwide.

Steve played for influential coaches John Haar; Canadian Baseball HOF ’07, on the U18 Canadian National Team, Dave Snow & Mike Weathers at Long Beach State, and Steve Rousey and Mike Kirby (New Mexico St.) at Los Angeles City College.

Doherty was selected as a shortstop and second baseman in the 1996 & 1997 MLB Amateur Draft by the St. Louis Cardinals and Arizona Diamondbacks respectively; where he signed with Arizona out of Long Beach State in 1997. His signing scout was Steve Springer; Quality At-Bats and current Oakland A’s Pro Scout. Doherty toiled in the Minors for a brief period and in 2001 made a comeback to play for MLB legend Steve Yeager and the Long Beach Breakers, where they captured the Western League Title in their inaugural season.

Steve embarked on his coaching career at Long Beach Wilson HS in Southern California where he remained as a Teacher & Coach for 10 years before transitioning into scouting.

Currently Steve serves as a National Scouting Coordinator for PERFECT GAME USA. He is also Owner, President, GM, Field Manager for the 5 Tool Players A’s Scout Team in Southern California - Est. 2007 http://www.5toolplayers.org
