Susan Z. Breyer

With the ability to draw inspiration from a variety of sources, Susan Z. Breyer enjoys a successful career creating art. Combining influences from her mother and fellow artists with her passion for the beauty of the environment, Ms. Breyer produces abstract, still life, and landscape oil paintings from her residence in Woodside, California.

After taking advice from her mother, renowned California impressionist artist Carolyn Zaroff, Susan Z. Breyer decided to try her hand at painting professionally. Ms. Breyer's mother showed her how quiet, simple landscapes can exude powerful beauty. Her mother's support and tutelage on the fearless use of bold colors provide an ample source of inspiration which Susan Z. Breyer incorporates into her paintings.

Upon beginning her career as an artist, Susan Z. Breyer studied under California painter Ning Hou for several years. Under Mr. Hou's guidance, Ms. Breyer developed her technique and strength in brushwork. Ning Hou also taught her to accept the use of vivid colors in her art and apply them liberally. During this time, Susan Z. Breyer learned to fully infuse the life and spirit of nature into her work. Today, she still paints with Carolyn Zaroff and Ning Hou and at weekly sessions with fellow Woodside artists Louise Stroe, Marina Marguet, and Justine Stamen Arrillaga.

While Ning Hou, her mother, and her peers lend her support and encouragement, the natural surroundings of Woodside provide Susan Z. Breyer with the basis for many her paintings. Quite the opposite from the cold weather and snow she grew up with in Upstate New York, Woodside offers Ms. Breyer ample sunlight and a multitude of subjects to capture on canvas, from rolling hills to vast expanses of green forest.
