Suzanne Carlson
Maritime Ferry Operator in Oregon, USA
I am a maritime ferry operator based in Oregon with a career focused on safety, precision, and dependable leadership on the water. I was raised in Coos Bay, where I developed a deep respect for Oregon’s coastal communities and waterways at an early age. Growing up around fishing boats, harbors, and the Pacific Northwest coastline inspired me to pursue a career in maritime operations.
Over the years, I have worked my way from deckhand to ferry operator, gaining hands-on experience navigating coastal routes, river crossings, and challenging weather conditions common along the Oregon coast. I hold a U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Credential along with certifications in radar navigation, emergency vessel operations, advanced firefighting, and passenger safety management.
I take pride in staying calm under pressure and making sure passengers and crews feel safe and confident during every crossing. For me, maritime work is about preparation, consistency, teamwork, and respect for the water.
Outside of work, I enjoy cycling, coastal photography, maritime history, and exploring Oregon’s natural landscapes. I am also passionate about environmental awareness and encouraging more women to pursue careers in the maritime industry.
