The Shade Store

In 2005, The Shade Store opened its doors, the product of collaboration between third generation textile and window service experts Ian Gibbs, Adam Gibbs, Zach Gibbs, and Greg Spatz. With over 50 years of history behind its creation, The Shade Store has grown beyond expectations in the 6 years since its founding. With showrooms located in Midtown Manhattan, SoHo, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, as well as over 80 employees, The Shade Store provides modern high quality window solutions at affordable prices.

The first generation in the line of businesses leading to The Shade Store, Milton Goldstein and his brother Jack, began their business in 1946 with a small Mt. Vernon, New York-based company selling textiles and window treatment services. The business began to increase the focus on its window services in 1974, when Milton Goldstein’s son-in-law, Cliff Gibbs, began working to expand the company. This effort by the second generation helped the business grow in size and reputation over the next seven years, meriting articles and interviews in various publications, including the New York Times.

In 1996, the Gibbs family began another business, Home Works, out of Westchester, New York. By 2000, this company had expanded, leading to the opening of a second location in the SoHo neighborhood of New York City. In 2005, Cliff’s sons Ian, Adam, and Zach Gibbs teamed with Greg Spatz, another grandson of Milton Goldstein, to open the first location of The Shade Store.

The Shade Store has achieved great success since then, opening new showrooms; expanding its business with catalogs and a strong online presence; and improving its offerings and the technologies behind them. The company supports the environment with its merchandise production techniques, shipping methods, and direct efforts such as the Building Green in Harlem Project and a partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation.
