An undergraduate alumnus of Stanford University, Thomas Schmalzried obtained his doctor of medicine (MD) from UCLA in 1984 and earned the Lange Medical Book Award. He completed post-graduate surgery and orthopaedics programs at the school and later served as a NIH-funded Research Fellow in Joint Replacement. Thomas Schmalzried, MD, completed a Hip and Implant Fellowship at Harvard University and joined Joint Replacement Institute (JRI) later that year in an executive capacity.

Certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, Dr. Thomas Schmalzried has now worked at JRI for nearly 30 years, during which time he has provided surgical and clinical care to patients, supervised ancillary staff, and educated medical trainees. He is also a part-time faculty member at Harbor-UCLA Department of Orthopaedics where, among other responsibilities, he collaborates with trainees on research projects.

Regarding his research specialty in hip and knee diseases and replacement, Dr. Schmalzried has written more than 170 peer-reviewed articles and served on the editorial board of multiple journals. His work includes, "The use of inductive implants for treating fractures," and "The infected hip: Telltale signs and treatment options." He holds membership with the California Orthopaedic Association and is a board member of the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation.
