A tiler is responsible for every aspect of the process of tile-laying in any given environment – they often carry out this work in domestic bathrooms, kitchens, as well as industrial locations, hotels, offices and shops. Another area where tilers are often found working is in swimming pools and leisure centres which are under construction. There are some tilers who will specialise in a particular area, such as underwater tile repair, restoration or marble fixing. Others will specialise in more artistic areas such as mosaic tiles.

You'll need a tiler if you need tiling to be laid in your home. Almost all tilers will work on both flooring and walls, and are usually able to work with several kinds of materials, from marble to ceramic. For smaller jobs, such as tiling an ensuite, a single tiler may be all that is needed; however with bigger projects such as those in an industrial site, a group of several tilers will usually be required.

Training to become a tiler takes quite a long time, as the tiler needs to be highly skilled at each stage of the tile laying process, so that they finish the job not only to a high standard, but also very quickly. A professional tiler will be able to calculate the number of tiles needed to fill the space, cut the tiles to the exact size and shape necessary, perform restoration work to the area which is to be tiled if it is damaged, and apply the tiles in a precise manner which results in a straight, flat and smooth finish.

When it comes to choosing a tiler, there are a number of things which you should ask before choosing one. Firstly, because tiling is a trade in which the results are very clearly visible, you can ask the tiler for photos of their previous work – many keep portfolios of their past projects to show prospective clients. You should also ask them for testimonials and references from previous clients, how long they have been working as a professional tiler, and whether or not tiling is their main service (some tradesmen will do several types of work, rather than specialising in just one area). You can check reviews of tilers on the Trustatrader website, and it's also worth asking your friends and family for a personal recommendation.
