This past summer, as I have done for the last three summers, I worked at the K-5th grade kids' summer camp at my old high school. My mom has been a kindergarten and first-grade teacher at the school for years, giving me an easy way in. But, little did I know, the hiring process would be the easiest part of the job. By this summer most of the kids knew me well, often calling me by Moms name or opting for another common nickname such as Miss Daniel, Mister Pooface, or Teenager. Working there has made me truly wonder how my Mom has persevered as a teacher for so many years. But, it has also shown me how joyous it can be to work with young kids. On some days when I was tired and not looking forward to work, all it took was one kid to say Hi Mr Daniel to cheer me up. From performing the Heimlich maneuver on a kid choking on water to finding countless lost water bottles, this experience has taught me a lot about both kids and my values. Being a teacher or working with children in general may not be the most lucrative career choice but it does offer a great sense of fulfillment and is a severely undervalued and underpaid job. Something that does concern me is the amount of technology being used and consumed by kids these days. Many of the first, second, and third graders had phones and social media accounts which made me reflect on and appreciate the fact that my parents didn’t give me a phone until high school. Although my career as a camp counselor is likely over, I have made many memories and learned several lessons, and I’m excited to continue visiting the kids for years to come.
