Ulric Shannon
Chicago, Illinois
Well I'm Ulric Shannon. I have a B.A. & M.A. in Poli Sci (UIUC), a M.A.T. (NLU), and I'm currently pursing my MBA (NLU). Im a Posse Scholar, Civic Leadership Fellow, a Chicago Teaching Fellow! & I Rep Chicago all day! I've lived in the Austin community my entire life. I attended Lovett Elementary and Lane Tech High School. I was fortunate enough to go to the University of Illinois on a $100,000.00 Scholarship (Posse Scholar). At the University of Illinois I majored in Political Science and minored in African American Studies. As a result of my hard work I was blessed with a fellowship Opportunity to attend Graduate school and study Political Science (concentration: Civic Leadership). While in Graduate School I was given the opportunity to study in Mexico City, Mexico, the University of Edinbrough, the University of London, and the University of Oxford. After finishing graduate school I worked for the Community and Economic Development Association (CEDA) as a Program Assistant for the Community Service Block Grant (CSBG). My experience at CEDA has provided me with valuable knowledge in the areas of city government, social services, and administration. As a Program Assistant for the Community Service Block Grant, I was responsible for the coordination of the CSBG Scholarship Program and the CEDA Hughs Graduate Scholarship Program. auditing CSBG files ensuring they are within the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity guidelines, Coordinating the Family of Distinction Program celebration both the state and local level, writing work programs that address the needs of low-income families in suburban Cook County, and monitoring program spending to ensure program budgets are within the budgeted allotments After working for CEDA I returned Graduate school at National Louis University as a Chicago Teaching Fellow. As a Chicago Teaching Fellow I am considered "highly qualified" as a first year teacher and I truly lived up to the that title. Helping develop school wide reward programs, field trips, and talents shows to implementing high expectations and rigor school-wide, building relationships with students and families, and remaining focused on my goal of closing the achievement gap, growing life long learners, and thinkers. As a result of my hard work, teaching a 3rd grade all boys class, Orion's Mind after school program, Saturday school enrichment, Winter enrichment academy, morning tutoring, Monday matters (parent program), and attending Golden Apple Inquiry science institute many of my students grew substantially both academically and socially. I was able to grow one particular student from (BOY) 22 words a minute to (EOY) 112 words a minute. This was one of the most life changing experiences in my life. While I made a huge impact on my students life both academically and socially, they made a huge impact on my life as well. I am now enrolled at National Louis University pursuing my 3rd Masters. I believe that a Masters in Business Administration would accompany my other masters greatly and allow me to have the education along with experience to serve my community properly. Below you will find an article written about me at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign entitled Dancing in the Right Direction. http://www.las.uiuc.edu/news/2007/shannon/
