Wall Drug
Wall, South Dakota
Situated on the Wall of the Badlands in western South Dakota, Wall Drug Store & Cafe is one of America's favorite roadside attractions.
After purhasing the small drug store in the town of Wall in 1931, Ted & Dorothy Hustead struck gold during the Great Depression by erecting billboards offering free ice water to primarly westward bound tourists on their way to visit Mount Rushmore National Memorial, which was being sculpted during that time.
Now a world-reknowned business establishement, Wall Drug continues to provide free ice water, as well as 5 cent coffee, to millions traveling through the Midwest via Interstate 90 as well as to those who vacation within South Dakota each year. Featuring hundreds of billboards spread across the 400+ miles that I-90 spans from east to west through the state, it's certainly no surprise that Wall Drug remains a prominent fixture in South Dakota's prevalent tourism industry.
Today, Wall Drug's pharmacy remains active, serving the tiny community of Wall and its guests; however, Wall Drug has grown to become much, much more than the thriving small-town drug store it once had been.
