Will Wright

I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication Studies, from the University of Minnesota, where I emphasized radio journalism. That's one of my favorite ways to tell stories; when a TV news viewer is left without images, he or she must rely on the imagination. Before I clicked with that, the first time I went to the University of Minnesota, I studied film history. But I understood too little of my goals and myself.

So, between beginning and finishing my college education, I took a break, to work and discover more about my goals and myself.

One path to that was as a Toastmaster, where I found that I excelled at and enjoyed rhetoric and performing.

Role models, presuming that you're familiar with them, reveal something about you.

My role models span a narrow range of themes:

  • as a Man they are Winston Churchill, Frederick Douglass and Sidney Poitier;
  • as a Communicator, former CNN anchor, Bernard Shaw, and CBS News Correspondent, Bill Whitaker;
  • as an Artist, Paul Robeson, Gordon Parks, Harry Belafonte and Spike Lee

Ever less people seem to read books these days. While I didn't grow up with an interest in reading, as a cornerstone of my lifestyle, now it's important for me that I read. Within the last year my favorite books are "The First Horse I See," which I bought for my eldest niece, "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks," and "Kissing Outside the Lines."

I wish that I knew how to express myself with as much courage as Langston Hughes.

One proverb says that a man can be judged by the company he keeps. I believe that one's life becomes ever richer and fuller the more loyal friends one has. I do not limit my friendships to those whom I met in school.

My most interesting failures: a magazine for multi-"racial" individuals and families.
