Yvette Raphael is JHHESA's Monitoring
and Evaluation Program Officer for JHHESA
affiliated with The Johns Hopkins University of Baltimore, Maryland and its
principal work in South Africa
is in support of the US
President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). She was born in Limpopo South Africa
After graduating at the age of 17; she embarked on a career in customer
services with various organizations.
Yvette was diagnosed HIV positive in 2000. In the same year, she joined POSLEC
SETA. The organization aimed to redress
past skills and education inequalities by facilitating and promoting skills
development to elevate the country's economic competitiveness and productivity.
She joined the Philani Support Group to assist communities dealing with HIV and
AIDS and other issues facing them. She was appointed Chairperson of PHILANI in
2003. She is also a founding member of a
Hospice and Care centre in the Midrand to care for people living with HIV and
AIDS. At the 2006 International AIDS
Conference, she met and subsequently became involved with the Campaign to End
AIDS, led by U.S.
advocates and activists. Returning to South Africa, she used the four principles
to empower people living with HIV/AIDS in her community to discuss issues
affecting them

She was active in the research study
done on the Prevalence, Impact and Business Response to HIV and AIDS in South Africa's
Safety and Security Sector. She was recently awarded the Melvin Jones
Fellowship for her work with orphaned and other vulnerable children in Ivory Park.
Yvette joined JHESSA in September 2007.
She was a facilitator and Ambassador for "Does HIV Look like Me?"
campaign in South Africa. She runs her own catering and events company:
"I do it because I love making
people happy and every meal is prepared with love." Yvette is active in several civil society
organizations and is committed to encouraging and motivating the youth. She is passionate about children living with
