Yolanda Methvin
Social Entrepreneur in Cape Town, South Africa
I'm an American, living and working in Cape Town, South Africa since 1998. I'm also a Wife, Mother, Founder and CEO of LithaFlora African Botanicals & Sourcing. We are a boutique brand & business which produces indigenous African products for health and wellness, manufactures products and sources bespoke artifacts, garments and jewellery and creates educational experiences.
I'm interested in social innovation, new physics, cultural diversity, transformational leadership, digital technology, indigenous foods and their wisdom system complements; For as long as I can recall, I've been a Social Entrepreneur. An Animist.
To me, social entrepreneurship offers the opportunity to engage creativity, compassion and solutions to common human problems. But it took a while for me to mature and to feel confident in pursuit of those values and to bring them to life professionally.
After graduating with a BA, from the University of Michigan in 1987, I grew as a young professional within the entertainment industry, working as a freelance television producer, between Washington DC, New York and Los Angeles. I worked in the burgeoning reality-based and entertainment TV industry, with companies ranging from BET, CNN, E! among other blue-chip TV and film companies, film Directors and Producers.
In 1992 I took up a fortuitous adventure, job and relocation to Mmbatho, Bophuthatswana; a homeland in what was then apartheid-era South Africa. Working at Bop TV was a transformational experience which drew me closer toward becoming the social entrepreneur I am today. I returned again to Cape Town in 1998 and worked as an Advertising agency Producer with key accounts housed at SABC before starting a family and the entrepreneurial venture, in the city I still call home, today.
Living and working in South Africa since 1998 has offered a world-class education in empathy, socio-cultural adaptation and environmental resilience in the face of change. And now within my business, LithaFlora.
We develop and deploy conscious, economically viable and socially innovative solutions in accordance with the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, toward achieving local Food Security and Poverty Reduction, specifically for African women and girls. Nature. Nurture and Nutrition; A natural pivot for me and my journey with LithaFlora.
