Student in Tokyo

I spent most of my high school career working in retail at a grocery store a few minutes away from my house.

I was a bagger and a customer service employee at a Publix about an hour outside of Atlanta, GA. When I first got my driver’s licence it was my mom’s requirement that if I wanted to drive, I needed to have a job. My mom knew the pharmacist at Publix, and I had family who worked there before, so naturally Publix was the first place I interviewed at. I ended up spending two and a half long years at Publix before I had to leave for college.

I only worked on the weekends during the school year because I wanted to have time to focus on my studies. Even though I only worked a few hours a week, I got a lot out of my experience working in retail.

A job in retail taught me how valuable hard work is, and motivated me to keep working in school.

Not only was I responsible for bagging groceries, I was responsible for providing premier customer service, keeping the parking lot clear of carts, and keeping the store clean. Working in a grocery store is seriously hard work, and my job taught me to respect the people that I see working in retail or fast food jobs.

Eventually, it was time to move on and leave my job. I moved off to Athens for college and left the grocery store days behind me. Even though I’m not there anymore, I appreciate the lessons that my job in retail taught me over the years.
