Government regulators and investigators say that WellPoint, the nation's largest insurance company, used computer algorithms to identify policyholders with breast cancer and launch automatic fraud investigations of the women's policies, at times resulting in rescissions, according to a Reuters investigation. The Reuters article profiles several women with breast cancer whose policies were canceled after their diagnosis but shortly before scheduled treatments. Federal investigators told Reuters that WellPoint specifically targeted women diagnosed with breast cancer. After WellPoint launched fraud investigations against the women, it "searched for some pretext to drop their polices," according to the Reuters story, by Murray Waas.
