Adam Burden launched his police career in 1987 as an officer with the City of Miami Police Department, where he served as an undercover detective, traced street narcotics, participated in reverse sting operations, and collaborated with other law enforcement agencies and the FBI. Throughout the following years, Adam Burden continued working for the city of Miami, earning promotions to become a sergeant, lieutenant, major, and then assistant chief of police.

In 2010, Adam Burden became deputy chief of police for the Opa Locka Police Department. He then worked as a self-employed security consultant, taught business and criminal justice at CCI Everest University, directed student services at ASA College, and served as district manager and director of operations for the private security firm Allied Universal. In 2016, he joined the North Miami Police Department, where he now acts as the city's police consultant.

Throughout his career, he has been active with the Police Executive Research Forum (PERF), a think-tank dedicated to police training and research, and has attended its conferences. Recently, he attended a PERF conference targeting the issue of suicide in the legal profession. He also volunteers with the organization Big Brothers Big Sisters.
