Across the table a disheveled man in glasses paused after telling me of his overdose and near-death experience. I hadn't asked him about this, but I listened.
He looked out the window and said to me, "You're doing God's work." I watched him. He said, "You're giving a voice to someone like me."
My job is to listen, record and give others a chance to speak. I'm an award winning journalist who has worked professionally for daily newspapers in Wisconsin since 2006. I specialize in narrative writing, investigative reporting and issues related to education, children and families.
